About Pregnancy Planning
If you are planning for a baby, we recommend that you see one of our friendly GPs before you conceive, to discuss factors that could affect conception and pregnancy like diet, exercise, smoking, dietary supplements and vaccinations.
If you have chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or epilepsy and you are taking medications, it is very important to see one of our doctors before you get pregnant. Some types of medications can be harmful to an unborn baby. We recommend coming a few months before you want to conceive to allow time for your body to adjust to any changes in treatment and ensure your medical condition is controlled effectively
Folic acid is critical in the early weeks of pregnancy when your baby’s brain and nervous system is still developing. This has been found to greatly reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
Additionally, it is recommended to take a daily supplement of folic acid before you fall pregnant.
